Electronic experimentation is oftentimes used for purpose of providing atmosphere to music, whereas we tend to associate the human element with providing the emotion in music. But as the boundaries of electronic music’s microgenres continue to be pushed, its ability to communicate emotions through sound grow more akin to the emotive potential of fingers on the strings, breathe through brass, the human voice.

Anymore, the patterns and repetition of sampled-based music seems to more properly represent the increasingly plugged-in nature of modern life. As if the vibrato of all those golden era singers no longer sound real as we’ve grown used to interpreting human emotion through the ebbs and flows of binary code, rather than the voice itself.

This cassette from California-based artist, BigCat, explores that emotive potential of electronic music through the sampling of repurposed sounds. The whole tape feels like a woozy waltz through afternoon daydreams. The soundtrack to another plane where the passing of time is experienced through auditory sensation. Fourty-eight minutes of ambient feelings, this one pulls at the same strings for me as Fennesz’s legendary, “Endless Summer” only without all the glitch. Put it on and settle in.
