about

Warm Gospel 55

I love the notion of habitat with regard to an album. A collection of songs all born and raised in the same place. Every album has a habitat, after all. It’s felt in the aesthetic, the sound space, the noise of the room captured in the recording itself. Dust in the grooves.

I’ve always found this particularly interesting with regard to sampled music. Sampling pulls from material spanning the globe, removes its original context, and repurposes it into a new one. Montreal-based producer, Spliff Jacksun, has been exploring this notion for years, pulling samples from the far-reaching collections of used record bins. But with “Habitat”, ol’ Spliffski creates the whole landscape from the ground up.

The entire tape is built from loose MPC1000 beats, raspy vocal chops, and open Latin guitar samples. Regardless of the context of their original source, these samples all wheeze through the same dust in the air. The result is an exploration of an intentionally constructed auditory habitat, culled entirely from sources outside itself. Call it globalization.
