At first, “In Kinder Light” presents itself as a beat tape. Mile-long kick drums and claps ring out over the opening track, as a city block worth of vocal samples ring out between the grooves. But those samples quickly descend into something much hazier and deeper. At times, it feels like a reimagining of Burial’s “Untrue” as an insomnia dawn over the East River. Each song feels like its own habitat, as layers of indistinct vocal chatter swirl on torrents of wind through the buildings whistling into slow, synth melodies. Indecipherable sounds flicker with hints of familiarity but disappear before recognition can ground them.
